Eating healthy will help you lose weight or maintain your weight if you’re already in shape. But weight loss alone may not be enough to motivate you to eat healthy. Healthy foods are often harder to find and take longer to prepare than refined sugars and processed foods, so it’s easy to lose motivation to choose healthy options.
Fortunately, there are plenty of other reasons for eating healthy. Here are four:
Higher energy levels. Consider what would happen if you consistently filled your car’s gas tank with cheap, low-quality gasoline. The engine would get gummed up and the car would become sluggish. If you constantly feed your body refined sugars and processed foods, it begins to resemble that sluggish car, lacking energy for even simple everyday activities. But switch it to the fuel it really needs—lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains—and the energy and power will return.
Healthier looking skin and hair. Nothing says “poor nutrition” quite like dull skin and hair. Eating healthy means getting the essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids your body needs to maintain all of its systems, including the skin. If you follow a balanced diet and drink plenty of water, you can do away with, or at least lessen, many skin conditions such as acne, eczema and allergic reactions. Your skin will also tend to be more even-toned and have a healthier glow.
Healthier digestive tract. Fiber and water help prevent gas, bloating and constipation.
Better overall health. Eating healthy can help you avoid heart problems, Type II diabetes and other health issues. Getting the right nutrients can also help ease depression and joint and muscle conditions.
With a little creativity and advance planning, eating healthy can become as much a part of your routine as any other good habit.
