Red Tails flies into theaters today with the true story of the first African-American pilots to serve in World War II. Despite arriving under the radar of most movie fans, Red Tails is sure to be a hit with STACKletes, thanks to its compelling true story and spectacular set pieces.
Much like STACK favorites Remember the Titans and Glory Road, Red Tails frames the civil rights struggle in the context of an exciting action-driven narrative. In this movie, the highly educated Tuskegee Airmen finally make it to Europe, but only after years of sandbagging by racist bureaucrats. The crew must not only prove themselves to their white counterparts, they also have to use every trick they know to survive some of the fiercest aerial battles of the war.
Led by Colonel A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard) and Major Emanuel Stance (Cuba Gooding Jr.), the crew turn in solid performances, and the flight scenes are truly spectacular. The film's computer-generated imagery was done by Lucasfilm, the innovators behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, and their experience shines through in every dogfight.
