Robert Griffin III was fined by the NFL earlier this week for wearing adidas apparel after his team’s Dec. 9 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
During the post-game press conference, the injured Redskins quarterback wore a shirt and sweatpants featuring the adidas logo. And while it may not seem like a major infraction, the NFL is currently under an exclusive contract with Nike, and its players are banned from wearing apparel, including hats and other paraphernalia, that conflict with the league’s sponsorship agreements.
An NFL official confirmed RGIII’s $10,000 fine to CSNWashington.com reporter Tarik El-Bashir on Wednesday. This is Griffin’s first fine from the league, but not the first time he has run into trouble fulfilling his contractual obligations to adidas in the Nike-sponsored league. Earlier this year, during warm-ups in New Orleans, he used a marker to cover up the Nike logo on his compression shirt. And while in St. Louis, he wore a gray t-shirt inside out to obscure the Nike swoosh.
