Coach Rick Scarpulla’s Ultimate Advantage
The fitness industry is a little like the Wild West. Strength coaches and trainers all have their own ideas about the best way to get bigger, stronger and faster. Ultimate Advantage owner and West Point powerlifting coach Rick Scarpulla has decided to make sense of the madness by introducing a new hybrid training program.
With a self-proclaimed obsession for becoming big and strong, Scarpulla is a certified Westside Barbell and Nike Sparq coach. Those familiar with the two certifications may find it a bit peculiar to combine powerlifting with performance training. “The power guys are all about barbells and dumbbells and don’t think you need any hurdles and ladders,” explains Scarpulla. “The Nike guys advocate ladders and say that you don’t need as much barbell and dumbbell training.”
Scarpulla has come to realize that he’s at the forefront of two legitimate, albeit competing, schools of thought. “I’m standing in the middle and see the benefits of both and realize that both guys are right,” adds Scarpulla. “From that, we developed the Ultimate Advantage program.”
Ultimate Advantage is a hybrid approach to training that is designed to build a better athlete. “We hit barbells and dumbbells, and hurdles and ladder, and we hit them hard,” says Scarpulla. “If we can make you stronger, faster and quicker, you will perform better in your sport.”
He backs this up with research that Ultimate Advantage conducted with over 200 athletes. After testing the athletes in 10 performance categories, Ultimate Advantage found that the top 10 always have a better chance of winning because they are simply better athletes.
However, Scarpulla emphasizes that extreme performance isn’t always about physical potential. “The biggest thing that we do is get you in the right frame of mind to be successful,” he says. “If there was only one thing that you could train, I would say the mind. We make you believe you can do things.”
