Filmmakers wasted no time developing a sequel to the enormously popular 2014 comedy Ride Along, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. The next installment, appropriately titled Ride Along 2, will bring back Hart as security guard Ben Barber and Ice Cube as Atlanta police officer James Payton.
In the original movie, Ben, recently accepted into the police academy and dating James’s sister, attempts to prove himself to James by accompanying him on what turns out to be a memorable 24-hour patrol of Atlanta. Made on a relatively small budget, the film became a record-breaker, debuting at $48.6 million in its opening weekend.
Tika Sumpter is reprising her role as Angela Payton. Joining the cast is Olivia Munn (Iron Man 2), Ken Jeong (The Hangover franchise), Glen Powell (The Dark Knight Rises), Carlos Gomez (Gang Related), Sherri Shepherd (Think Like a Man) and Benjamin Bratt of TV’s Modern Family.
Tim Story is returning to direct the sequel.
As with the first film, the screenplay was written by collaborators Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who also wrote the action comedy The Tuxedo and the adventure pic Clash of the Titans.
Ride Along 2 is set to roar into theaters on Jan. 15, 2016.
