Ridley Scott Signs on to Direct Matt Damon in ‘The Martian’
According to reports, Ridley Scott will take over as the director of the outer space adventure The Martian, starring Matt Damon. Scott will replace Drew Goddard, who left the production to fulfill a commitment to helm the Spider-Man spinoff, Sinister Six.
Scott is one of the producers for this 20th Century Fox project, which is based on Andy Weir’s self-published book by the same name. Being compared to movies such as Cast Away and Apollo 13, The Martian tells the story of an astronaut (Damon) stranded and struggling to stay alive on a Martian colony, while NASA attempts to mount a rescue mission. The odds are definitely against him when he is left alone following a dust storm. Death seems more than likely with damaged machinery, limited supplies and the harsh environment. The astronaut relies on his engineering skills and determination to survive the crisis.
With a history of directing hit sci-fi flicks, including Alien in 1977 and Prometheus in 2012, Scott is a natural choice for this picture. More outer-space adventures are in Scott’s future, as the filmmaker prepares to shoot Prometheus 2 as well as a new Blade Runner movie.
