Director Carlos Saldanha, best known for the hit animated feature film series Rio and Ice Age, is set to direct a live-action/CGI monster flick for 20th Century Fox titled Shadows. Based on a hot pitch by Black List screenwriter Jason Micallef (Butter), the movie is set in the world of cryptozoology and is planned as the first installment in a three-film franchise. Cryptozoology is the study of mythic and legendary creatures such as the Loch Ness Monster, the Yeti and Bigfoot.
Micallef and Saldanha are also producing, along with Trevor Engelson (License to Wed), Josh McGuire (Alien Outpost) and Maresa Pullman (Welcome to the Rileys).
According to ComingSoon.net, Micallef was previously “developing a cryptozoology-themed project with the Universal-based Illumination Entertainment, with Jack Black attached to produce. Whether this is a variation of that project is unclear.”
Shadows could be Saldanha’s live-action directorial debut. However, the highly in-demand filmmaker has two other live-action films currently in the works, including big screen adaptations of the book series Timeless and a movie version of Royden Lepp’s graphic novel Rust.
