Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese Reunite for ‘The Irishman’
Martin Scorsese’s long awaited mob film The Irishman is finally moving along. The project will reunite Scorsese with Robert De Niro, who has actually been committed to star in the movie for several years. It’s been over 25 years since the actor and filmmaker collaborated on the iconic Mafia drama, Goodfellas.
The Irishman is based on the hitman confessional I Heard You Paint Houses, by Charles Brandt. This film will also reteam Scorsese with Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. Amazingly, the director has never worked with Al Pacino, but there’s a good chance that Pacino will join the cast, making the film a must-see for fans of this genre.
The screenplay was written by the Oscar Award-winning Steve Zaillian, who wrote another Scorsese crime-drama, 2002’s Gangs of New York.
A relatively new company, STX Entertainment, won the international rights to the project in a fierce bidding war that involved giants Universal, Lionsgate and Fox.
STX International president David Kosse said, “We could not be more excited or privileged to have secured the international rights to this incredible motion picture. Fabrica de Cine’s vision and support in putting together this film is incredible. Martin Scorsese is one of the world’s most accomplished filmmakers, and The Irishman is precisely the kind of premier tentpole programming that will help distinguish STX as we continue to build our studio and especially our infrastructure overseas.”
Robert DeNiro will next be seen in the Roberto Duran sports biopic Hands of Stone, in theaters on August 26.
