Besides being an exceptional Down Judge, Thomas is set to continue breaking the barrier and becoming the first female referee in a Super Bowl.
NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Troy Vincent, said in a released statement that these seven officials are truly the best in the business.
“Sarah Thomas has made history again as the first female Super Bowl official,” Vincent said to NFL.com. “Her elite performance and commitment to excellence have earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl.
This is Thomas’ sixth season officiating in the NFL, and she has worked four playoff games. Her career has been on an upwards trajectory. In 2007 she became the first woman to officiate a major college football game. Then in 2015, Thomas was hired by the NFL as a full-time official. Four years later, she had the opportunity to officiate a playoff game, once more the first female.
Now Thomas will have the honor to work in arguably the biggest sports event of the year.
