Sean Penn, Javier Bardem Star in ‘The Gunman’
Academy Award-winning actors Sean Penn and Javier Bardem will star in the upcoming spy thriller The Gunman, a big screen adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel, The Prone Gunman.
Penn, who is also co-producing the film, plays former international operative and military contractor Jim Terrier, who is forced to go on the run after being betrayed by his former employer. Suffering from PTSD, Jim is chased across Europe as he tries to clear his name.
The cast also features Idris Elba of the Thor film franchise, along with Ray Winstone (Snow White and the Huntsman) Melina Matthews (Saving Grace), Mark Rylance (The Other Boleyn Girl), and up-and-comer Daniel Westwood, who recently completed several high-profile movies, including Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Directing this crime drama is Pierre Morel, best known for the popular thriller, Taken. The screenplay was written by Don MacPherson, (The Avengers, 1998) and Pete Travis, who is better known as a director for features such as Vantage Point.
This is the first action role Penn has played in more than 30 years. He was quoted in USA Today as saying: “Calling it an ‘action film’ is kind of like calling Meryl Streep a sexy blonde chick. She is. But that really doesn’t tell the story of what she is at all.”
The Gunman will hit theaters nationwide Feb. 20, 2015.
