‘Mortal Instruments’ TV Series ‘Shadowhunters’ in the Works
Fans of Cassandra Clare’s popular “Mortal Instruments” novels will be excited to learn that an adaptation of this book series will soon come to TV. ABC Family has picked up the TV drama, to be titled Shadowhunters.
The channel’s decision to order the show straight-to-series is a sign they really believe in the project. Of course, this is a franchise that is already hugely successful in print, especially among younger readers.
The storyline follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, whose existence is suddenly transformed when she finds out she is the latest in a long line of human-angel hybrids known as Shadowhunters who hunt demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is compelled to join the demon-hunting world. As she teams up with the mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend Simon, Clary embarks on a new way of life in which she is surrounded by vampires, faeries, warlocks and werewolves. These experiences take her on a journey of self-discovery, leading her to explore the truth about her past and what the future might hold.
ABC Family president Tom Ascheim was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying, “Shadowhunters is a big, epic saga that will resonate with viewers who come to ABC Family for the Harry Potter, Hunger Games and Twilight franchises. A New York Times best-seller for 122 consecutive weeks, with over 35 million copies in print worldwide, Shadowhunters is the perfect story to share with our audience.”
The series showrunner will be Ed Decter, whose credits include Helix and Unforgettable.
The Mortal Instruments novel City of Bones was adapted for the big screen in 2013, but when it performed below expectations at the box office, plans were scrapped for further installments.
Shadowhunters will begin production in Toronto next month.
