Shaquille O’Neal to Star in TV Series About Shaquille O’Neal
Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal is about to star in a semi-autobiographical, scripted series that will air on TruTV. A workplace comedy entitled Shaq Inq, it will loosely chronicle the business empire created by the former NBA All-Star and depict the wild, frenetic environment in which O’Neal’s products and endorsements are managed.
Besides O’Neal himself, other characters in this series of half-hour programs are the quirky employees who juggle managing the company’s existing products with Shaq’s sometimes offbeat new ideas and who seem constantly to be competing for power, position and recognition from their boss.
The scripts are being written by Jeremy Garelick, who is known for writing high-profile comedy features like The Break-Up and The Wedding Ringer. Galavant’s John Fortenberry will direct. O’Neal will executive produce along with Mike Tollin, best known for the series Smallville. A relatively new production company, Mandalay Sports Media, will produce Shaq Inq. The banner specializes in sports programming such as Sin City Saints and Undrafted.
TruTV president and head of programming Chris Linn recently stated, “There is no denying Shaq’s multifaceted appeal. Thus, we couldn’t be happier to be collaborating with him, as well as Mike Tollin and Mandalay Sports Media, as we continue to push into new formats.”
Tollin remarked on O’Neal the businessman, saying, “Shaquille and I have been friends for 20 years, and his growth as a businessman never ceases to amaze and amuse me.”
This is not the first collaboration between O’Neal and TruTV. The Big Aristotle is currently hosting the viral video prank series Upload with Shaquille O’Neal for the network.
