Will DC Release ‘Shazam’ Movie After All?
Shazam‘s journey to a theatrical release has been long and arduous. But if a recent list released by NikkiFinke.com regarding WB’s upcoming DC Universe offerings is to be believed, the movie may finally see the light of day.
During an interview with Coming Soon late last year, presumed director Peter Segal downplayed the chances of the movie getting off the ground based on the popularity of Man of Steel and the similarities between the two superheroes. He said, “As long as Superman stays hot in the marketplace, there seems like a little bit of a crossover between the two characters. After Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, it seemed like there was a moment where Shazam was going to see the light of day. That’s when you heard those stories. Now that Superman is being invigorated and going up against Batman, I think it’s difficult for DC to figure out how to launch this character in the wake of Superman’s resurgence.”
So have DC and Warner Bros. found some way to use Superman’s popularity as a launching pad for Captain Marvel? It would seem so, but not without sacrifice. Fans may not get a chance to see the superhero’s alter ego, Billy Batson, and his life as a pre-teen if he’s included in the Justice League. If he is excluded from the team, DC would have to create a separate universe for him or have a great excuse for why he isn’t around to help save the world alongside Superman. Let’s just hope they skip the dark realism surrounding Man of Steel and keep some of the good-natured charm of the comic book series.
It’s unclear whether Segal and Dwayne Johnson, who has long rumored to be attached to the project, are still going to be involved. Shazam is tentatively set for July 2016.
