Shelby Osborne Signs as First Female Defensive Back in College Football
Although football remains one of the only sports offered for men’s teams in high school, that didn’t stop Shelby Osborne from achieving her dreams.
The Jeffersonville (Indiana) High School three-sport athlete, who previously played soccer, tennis and track, realized her senior year that she had yet to find her true passion and decided to try out for the football team.
In an interview with ESPN, Osborne said, “I floated from sport to sport: track, softball, baseball, wrestling, cross country, cheerleading. I played them all, and I never found the one that captured my heart.”
After struggling to find the right sport, Osborne fell in love with football and helped her team to a 6-5 season as a cornerback.
After playing one season, Osborne didn’t want her career to end just because high school was over, so she filled out hundreds of recruiting applications, hoping to find a college program for which to play.
The 5-foot-5 defensive back was contacted by Campbellsville University in Kentucky, where she signed to play in the fall of 2014, while majoring in physical training.
Although female collegiate football players have come before Osborne and many will come after, she will be the first female defensive back in college football history.
