Sleeper NFL Prospect From Germany Moritz Boehringer Might be the Next Calvin Johnson
NFL teams traditionally pluck draft picks from college football powerhouses like Ohio State, Alabama and Notre Dame. They don’t normally draft players from, say, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Moritz Boehringer could change that.
Last season, the 22-year-old Boehringer racked up 59 receptions for 1,232 yards and 13 touchdowns to earn GFL (German Football League) Rookie of the Year honors. His strong season overseas apparently caught the attention of some NFL scouts, which led to his participation in Florida Atlantic’s recent Pro Day.
His results were absolutely phenomenal, prompting speculation that he could be drafted as high as the fourth round.
Boehringer measured 6-foot-4-1/2-inches and weighed 227 pounds. He clocked a 4.43 40-Yard Dash, jumped a 39-inch Vertical and leapt a 10-foot-11-inch Broad Jump. He also recorded a 4.10 20-Yard Short Shuttle, a 6.65 3-Cone Drill and pushed out 17 reps on the Bench Press test.
NFL.com points out that Boehringer recorded his 4.43 40-Yard Dash on grass, which translates to a result of roughly 4.39 on turf.
To put it simply, there’s never been a prospect quite like Boehringer. For some perspective on how rare he is as an athlete, consider this: the last receiver at the NFL Combine who measured over 6-foot-4, weighed over 225 pounds and ran a sub-4.45 40-Yard Dash was Calvin Johnson.
All of Boehringer’s event results would have ranked him in the top five among wide receivers at the 2016 NFL Combine. Although that’s impressive enough, the fact that his size is more befitting a tight end than a wide receiver makes his performance truly astonishing. “There just aren’t many historical comparisons for a player testing like [Moritz] did at that size,” writes Andy Fenelon of NFL.com.

Boehringer’s freakish athleticism will almost certainly earn him a contract offer from an NFL team. Whether he’s drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent remains to be seen. The biggest question teams seem to have regarding Boehringer is whether his incredible film is due primarily to inferior competition. “Any time a guy covers all the measurables from length to explosion to speed, you tend to get excited. This is the first time I’ve seen him in person. He’s got a chance, but you have to realize he’s [been] going against guys who aren’t even at a D-III level. How will he deal with that jump in competition?,” an anonymous pro scout told NFL.com.
Whether Boehringer goes on to become the next Calvin Johnson remains to be seen, but he’s certainly an intriguing prospect. The Patriots, Vikings, Broncos, Packers and Chiefs have reportedly express heavy interest in the German sensation. Check out his ridiculous highlight film:
