Some NBA Team at the Pre-Draft Combine Asked Kansas Guard Frank Mason III How He Wanted to Die
Combine questions, both in the NFL and NBA, are getting weirder and more cringeworthy every year. Last year, it was reported that during their 15-minute interviews, some NFL teams were inquiring about prospects’ sexuality. A team asked Mitch Trubisky how well he could dance the “Nae-Nae.” Another team quizzed Austen Lane about how he’d kill someone. Now, at this year’s NBA Combine, the questions are apparently getting even stranger—and darker.

Kansas guard Frank Mason III disclosed that a team asked him, “If I were to die, which way would I want to go out?” That’s certainly a jarring inquiry to receive from front office officials of a team you might be playing for in a couple of months; and coming up with a coherent answer on the spot seems even more challenging. Mason’s response got a tad bit depressing.
“I said in my sleep, because I wouldn’t want to suffer any pain or anything,” Mason said. “I’d rather be asleep around my son and my family.”
Imagine walking out of that interview. You’d spend the rest of the day thinking about your own mortality. What are you doing, NBA teams?
