Kevin Durant's arachnid-themed moniker was a fan creation, living mostly on internet forums rather than being embraced by Durant himself.
Then KD was sued by a former 80's singer named Mark Durante, who claimed he had trademarked "Durantula" long before KD began using it.
Durant's legal team then announced that Durant didn't come up with the nickname and had no intention to use it.
He then starred in a series of commercials where the entire premise was that he still didn't have a nickname. Not exactly a glowing review.
The name had good intentions, supposedly representing the idea that the slender-yet-deadly Durant has tarantula-like powers.
But the image of Durant's head on a spider's body is somewhat terrifying, and the nickname sounds like something a middle schooler made up after huffing too much glue.
We can do better, guys.
Slim Reaper is a pretty awesome nickname for a player like KD, and one that conjures a much more intimidating image.
Unfortunately, Durant is not a fan.
