STACK's simultaneous acquisition of two market leaders creates a fully-integrated sports performance service platform targeting youth athletes, offering content and media experiences, athlete training services, digital tools and mobile applications.
NEW YORK – STACK, the nation's leading multi-platform media and content company serving athletes, today announced that it has acquired Velocity Sports Performance and Driven Apps. The two acquisitions fit STACK's new strategy of developing direct-to-consumer offerings and in-person experiences for its target market of youth athletes, complementing its existing multi-platform content and media business.
Combining Velocity Sports Performance, the largest youth athletic performance training organization in the United States, and Driven Apps, the leading developer of sports training technology products and applications, with STACK's existing media and content assets creates the nation's first fully-integrated sports performance service platform, engaging millions of athletes monthly across all touch points.
As part of the transaction, STACK will rebrand Velocity Sports Performance's national network of more than 40 athlete training centers, providing one-on-one training services to young athletes and adding an on-the-ground coaching team and new experiential element to STACK's multi-platform offerings. The applications developed by Driven Apps with superstar professional athletes Dwyane Wade and Adrian Peterson will be integrated and promoted across all of STACK's media and marketing assets; and Driven's best-in-class technology platform will power new mobile, tablet and desktop training experiences for STACK's growing audience of athletes.
STACK Co-Founder and CEO, Nick Palazzo, said, "Our mission at STACK has always been to educate and inspire young athletes. With the acquisitions of Velocity and Driven Apps, our expansion into athlete training centers and digital applications is a natural extension of that mission and our brand. We are no longer just a sports performance content and media company; we are now a sports performance services company. Since we launched nine years ago, we have been helping athletes reach their performance goals with our content and media products. Now we are taking it to the next level by offering branded in-person training experiences and personalized digital applications. These are natural steps in the evolution of our business model and a reflection of our growth over the last few years. Since we are projecting more than 10 million monthly unique visitors at STACK.com in the near future, it was imperative for us to secure assets that would allow us to provide direct-to-consumer offerings and also find ways to enhance their experiences with the STACK brand—online, off-line and via mobile devices. We are very excited to introduce Velocity Sports Performance and Driven Apps to our millions of athlete consumers."
Peter Barbaresi, Velocity Sports Performance President and CEO, said, "By joining forces with an industry leader such as STACK, we instantly become significantly more active in the development and distribution of world-class performance training programming and content to all of our franchise partners and their athletes. Not to mention, we now have access to owned media assets that reach millions of our target consumers each month. This is truly a juggernaut combination of sports performance entities, establishing an amazing platform for significant and sustained growth. We could not be more excited to align with STACK and continue to grow the Velocity business in partnership."
Jake Edwards, Driven Apps CEO, said, "The new affiliation with STACK allows us to continue to innovate and develop best-in-class sports training aids and applications with the added benefit of built-in distribution. We are thrilled to come together underneath the STACK brand and continue to revolutionize the world of digital sports training."
Moving forward, Velocity Sports Performance and Driven Apps will operate under the STACK brand. The combination of Velocity's national facility footprint and performance coaching staff network, Driven's products and technology, and STACK's extensive reach within a huge athlete demographic creates an integrated athlete training and sports performance platform that is unmatched in the marketplace. Velocity's President Peter Barbaresi, Driven's CEO Jake Edwards and Driven's CTO Royce Cho will continue their leadership roles within their existing businesses, while also supporting STACK's broader direct-to-consumer initiatives. The Company will add an Orange County, California office and add staff to its existing New York office, while maintaining its offices in Cleveland and Palo Alto.
