Keeping track of your performance during workouts is a great way to evaluate the effectiveness of your training program. For swimmers, though, this has been a challenge, because traditional tracking technology has been ineffective in the water. However, a new technology product called the Finis Swimsense now makes it possible to monitor your pool workouts.
Attaching to your wrist like a watch, the Swimsense is relatively streamlined to avoid impacting your stroke. It offers up to 12 hours of battery life, stores 14 past workouts and displays swim statistics on an easy-to-read screen. Needless to say, the Swimsense is waterproof.
Finis had to get creative to find ways to detect the unique movements of swimming—like the push-off, the various strokes and the flip turn. By using accelerometers [which detect movement], a magnetometer [a digital compass] and custom algorithms, they created a system so fine-tuned that it can distinguish among the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.
The Swimsense provides accurate statistics on your workout, and it's customizable. Based on your inputs, it tracks splits, laps, pace time, stroke count, stroke rate, distance per stroke and calories burned. It also provides SWOLF scores, a standard measure of swimming efficiency, to help you improve your technique.
You can get an overview of your workout on the Swimsense, but you can also upload its data to a Mac or PC for more in-depth analysis. This will help you identify strengths and weaknesses, then customize your training program to improve your performance.
The Finis Swimsense is an excellent tool for any swimmer who wants to gain valuable feedback on his or her performance. It's available at finisinc.com for $199.99. View the video below to see the Swimsense in action.
