STACK Approved: Mizuno JPX-800 Hybrid Club
No matter how gifted you are as a golfer, you will inevitably hit balls into the rough [recent case in point: Rory McIlroy’s triple bogey on hole 10 at the 2011 Masters]. What separates great golfers from good ones is the ability to recover from bad shots.
While recovering from a bad shot depends primarily on talent, hybrid clubs like the Mizuno JPX-800 Hybrid can help. They offer iron-like control with superior distance to help golfers recover from tough situations on the course.
STACK recently had a chance to demo the JPX-800 Hybrid, and we concluded that it’s a valuable club to have in your bag.
The JPX-800 uses “Hot Metal” face technology and Ultimate Dynamic Stability design to maximize ball speed and forgiveness, even when the ball is struck outside the sweet spot. Mizuno’s technology allows the club to get under the ball and maintain club-head speed to launch it off a hard fairway or cut through deep rough.
Compared to a wood, the JPX-800 has a smaller head and seems heavy for its size. The weight allows for swing control more akin to an iron and for hitting through undesirable lies. However, what’s most impressive about the club is its forgiveness. The flight path of the ball was very similar to an iron, and the number of hooks and slices that occur when using a wood was dramatically reduced.
On the course, the JPX-800 Hybrid was particularly useful on par-5s and long par-4s when hitting off the fairway or rough. It doesn’t have the soft feel of an iron, but it offers iron-like precision, while also packing a few extra yards on to your shots.
The Mizuno JPX-800 Hybrid is available for $169.99. Also, check out Mizuno’s Swing-to-Win Challenge for a chance to win one of 800 prizes, including the JPX-800 Hybrid, or to play a round with PGA Tour stars Luke Donald and Charles Howell III.
