In this third installment of STACK's Gatorade athlete testing series [read the first two at The Journey Begins and The Competition Heats Up], Josh Staph and I travel to New York City for tests conducted by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute [GSSI]. A full set of baseline tests were used to evaluate key components of our athletic performance. Needless to say, we were looking forward to seeing how our results would stack up in our intense head-to-head competition.
Arriving at the GSSI facility, we were impressed with the cutting-edge equipment that would be used to showcase our strengths and expose our weaknesses. GSSI scientists Melissa Tippett and Dr. Kim White put us through the same battery of tests that Gatorade uses to prepare their elite athletes for a combine or upcoming season [learn about the tests in the video above]. The first set of tests established a baseline and identified areas that could be improved with the help of a GSSI fueling and training plan.
Once the lab tests were completed, we were put through additional strength, endurance and mobility evaluations, administered by Todd Durkin, owner of Fitness Quest 10 and trainer to Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson.
Based on our test results, the Gatorade experts assessed our current physical and fueling status and guided us on how to make improvements over the next eight weeks. Josh and I learned a lot about our strengths and weaknesses, and we're both looking forward to taking our performance to the next level with the help of Gatorade's athlete performance testing program.
