Striiv Promotes Fitness, Competition and Giving Back
At first, Striiv might seem like nothing more than a nifty tool for folks looking to get fit for the first time. To be fair, Striiv does advertise itself as a device for beginners, which is why we were skeptical about whether athletes—who are presumably already in good shape—could benefit from it. But after spending a few minutes with Striiv, we recognized not only that it can help athletes, but that it’s a fun way to compete with your teammates while contributing to worthy causes.
Functions
Striiv’s main function is counting steps. That’s why we were thrown off a bit, since athletes are more interested in their 40-Yard Dash time than how many steps they walk in a day. But the device also measures the number of stairs you climb, how far you run, total miles you walk and total calories you burn. Carry Striiv in your pocket or clip it to a waistband when you head out for a run or do stadium stairs.
Showing your stats to teammates might push them to work a little harder. The coolest thing about Striiv? It offers lots of opportunities to get creative about how you train and compete to reach the next level.
Challenges
Striiv puts up challenge in a range—easy, medium and hard. Here’s what Striiv is currently challenging us to complete:
- Easy: Hit 75 Running Steps in 1 minute
- Medium: Reach 1,902 Steps in 3 minutes
- Hard: Climb 90 Stairs in 10 minutes
Don’t like those challenges? Just hit the “spin” button for more. Call out your teammates and see which ones step up to meet each challenge.
Walkathon
Striiv strives to do good. One of its most innovative features is the Walkathon option. You start by choosing among three charitable missions—clean water, the fight against polio and saving the Rainforest. Striiv then gives you a goal. We selected Clean Water and were tasked with completing 18,000 steps in a day (which is harder than it sounds). The reward? Striiv and other sponsors provide—at no cost to us—a day’s worth of clean water for a child in South America. Such a real and tangible benefit can be a strong motivator for any athlete who needs an excuse to get off the couch and get moving.
With Striiv, we were reminded not to judge a book by its cover. Don’t be deceived by the advertising campaign. Have a blast using Striiv to achieve your personal sports performance goals, track your stats and see which of your friends and teammates have the best numbers. Priced at $99, Striiv is a device worth considering for the holiday season.
