Sue Bird & Candace Parker on Pick-Up Ball With the Boys
If you’re a female athlete who likes to hone her skills playing pick-up ball, you may have noticed an interesting phenomenon. In co-ed pick-up games, guys generally don’t know how to handle playing against girls. Either they’ll back off or start to overplay you once you show them up. What should you do?
Recently, in a new Nike video, two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion Sue Bird spoke out about her experience playing pick-up hoops with the guys. “Going to play pick-up for a woman basketball player…it’s always going to be a story,” she says.
One of the great things about basketball is that you can pick up and play pretty much anywhere. Find a group with whom you can stay on the court and show why you belong. As a female playing co-ed ball, recognize that pick-up hoops presents an interesting challenge, and you’re not alone if you feel singled out.
On the fence about putting your skills to the test against the boys? Watch the following video from Bird’s fellow WNBA All-Star Candace Parker, who actually credits playing pick-up ball with her brothers for teaching her the skills she needed to succeed in the WNBA.
