CBS has offered us a first look at their upcoming TV series Supergirl. Check it out below!

The clip and the overall series have elicited an outpouring of opinions. Some people are eager to welcome a show with a female superhero. Others are sure it’s a dead weight that will drown all future attempts to put females in a male-dominated genre.

For those who champion the former opinion, it probably doesn’t help that the trailer is shockingly similar to a skit Scarlett Johansson (portraying Black Widow) recently did on Saturday Night Live. Johansson riffed on common tropes that seem to be associated with romantic comedies. And in the six-plus-minute trailer for Supergirl, lead actress Melissa Benoist (Glee), who portrays Kara Zor-El, nimbly tackles nearly every chick flick template.

The trailer opens with Kara performing her demanding job as an assistant to Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart). When she runs into a new employee, former photographer James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), Kara is instantly impressed and can barely maintain eye contact as she mumbles her way through their conversation.

Later in the day, while talking to her sister Alexandra (Chyler Leigh), who apparently knows all about Kara’s super abilities, she frets over her depressingly normal life and what to wear on a blind date. However, everything changes when Alexandra’s flight runs into trouble and is about to make a crash landing that will leave no survivors. Unwilling to allow her sister to die, Kara takes proactive approach and starts to embrace her powers.

Initially, Kara is not pleased about being called Supergirl instead of Superwoman. Surprisingly, it’s her boss who corrects her view. “What do you think is so bad about girl? I’m a girl and your boss and powerful and rich and hot and smart,” says Cat. “So, if you perceive Supergirl as anything less than excellent, isn’t the real problem . . . you?”

Supergirl will air at 8 p.m. Mondays this fall on CBS.
