Rodrigo Santoro and Antonio Banderas Star in Miner Drama ‘The 33’
Featuring a cast that includes Rodrigo Santoro (Focus) and Antonio Banderas (The Expendables 3), The 33 tells the harrowing true story of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped over 200 stories underground for an astounding 69 days in the wake of the San Jose copper and gold mine collapse in 2010.
Shot in actual working mines in Colombia and Chile, the movie shows what happened as the miners endured weeks of horrendous conditions while awaiting their dramatic rescue.
Banderas plays Mario “Super Mario” Sepúlveda, who is remembered for updating the rescuers on the miners’ condition by sending out videos. Santoro stars as Florencio Ávalos, the second-in-command of the miners. Veteran actor Martin Sheen plays Sepúlveda’s father. The cast also includes Gabriel Byrne (Vampire Academy), Juliette Binoche (Godzilla), James Brolin (Castle), Cote de Pablo (NCIS) and Lou Diamond Phillips, last seen in the TV series Longmire.
The picture was directed by Patricia Riggen, best known for Girl in Progress. Based on the book by Hector Tobar, the screenplay was written by Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club), Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries), Michael Thomas and Mikko Alanne.
The 33 will hit theaters nationwide on Nov. 13.
