Mob Comedy ‘The Family’ Opens in Theaters This September
The dark crime comedy The Family, starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, comes to theaters Sept. 13. The film follows an infamous mafia family relocated to Normandy, France, by the federal Witness Protection Program after they testify against the mob. De Niro and Pfeiffer are the Manzonis, a married couple with two teenaged children played by Dianna Agron and John D’Leo.
Having discovered how difficult it is to fit in with the locals in their quiet, new town, the family reverts back to old habits when problems arise. CIA agent Stansfield, played by Tommy Lee Jones, does his best to keep them in line, but their behavior draws the attention of their old mafia cronies. Things get chaotic when old friends track them down and scores get settled.
The Family is the third time De Niro and Pfeiffer have worked together. The two previously appeared in Stardust and Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve. The film also stars two actors best known for their roles on the HBO series The Sopranos—Vincent Pastore and Dominic Chianese.
The Family is based on the novel Badfellas, by Tonino Benacqista. It was produced and directed by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element), who also penned the screenplay along with Michael Caleo. Martin Scorsese is one of the executive producers.
