Though he wasn't the first or the second quarterback taken in the 2017 NFL Draft, Clemson's Deshaun Watson didn't have to wait long for his name to be called on Thursday night in Philadelphia. North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky and Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes II went second and 10th overall, respectively, but when the Houston Texas traded up to no. 12, Watson knew he wouldn't be in the Green Room much longer.
Houston is a perfect spot for Watson. The man who dispatched Alabama in the national championship game will have an immediate shot at nabbing the starting quarterback position. But after posing for all the requisite photos and doing hundred of interviews following his selection, Watson wanted to turn the attention to someone else: his mom.
Watson surprised his mother Deann with a brand new, all-black 2017 Jaguar to say thank you for raising him on her own as a single mother. Deann also overcame a battle with cancer to continue to raise her son.
"My mom, she's my rock," Watson said at his first press conference in Houston. "She's the one that raised me. Single-parent mom of four kids and the struggles that we went through, it was tough. My whole family plays a big part of my support cast, and it's just been awesome to have them in my life."
