What you do at training camp can affect your whole season. It’s a time to work on your endurance, improve your skills, learn the plays and interact with your teammates. But while you are taking the time to train various parts of your body—your muscles, legs, lungs and brain—don’t overlook training yourself to fuel properly for practices and games.
Assuming you already eat the standard three meals a day, here’s a list of snacks and other items to add to your grocery cart. They will give you the extra energy you need to go that extra mile. Most are non-perishable, but at the end of the list I include some perishables in case you have access to a fridge to store food when you’re away from home.
Complex carbohydrates and grains
- Instant oatmeal packs
- Wheat or rice crackers
- Dehydrated fruit or fruit cups packed in 100 percent fruit juice
- Popcorn
- Granola Bars
Protein and healthy fats
- Cans of tuna or salmon
- Roasted chickpeas
- Nuts or seeds
- Nut butter
- Protein bars
- Turkey jerky or healthy beef jerky such as Simply Snackin Products
Perishable Snacks
- Sliced turkey
- String cheese
- Greek yogurt
- Hard-boiled eggs
