Tennis Like You Have Never Seen It in "The Game Is the Game"
In serving up the Australian Open, adidas stepped up its game with the second flashy video in its “The Game Is the Game” viral video series. The series, which follows pro tennis players trying out a country’s twist on tennis before major tour events, started in November when Andy Murray took on Barbados road tennis champ Sylvian Barnett. The second, shot before the Australian Open, features the forgotten sport of sticke tennis.
In the new video below, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic, Gilles Simon and Jo Tsonga play a modified game of sticke tennis, a 19th century invention that combined real tennis with lawn tennis in a walled court. Only a few sticke tennis courts remain in the world, but that didn’t stop adidas from constructing one of its own in a Melbourne, Australia alley. The event, which also featured DJs, graffiti artists and breakdancers, ended up drawing quite a crowd.
The new video builds on the first The Game Is the Game event, which took place in a secret location in England and featured an even stranger sport, road tennis. Road tennis, a blend of tennis and ping-pong, is played almost exclusively in the Caribbean.
Why go to the trouble of setting up such odd events? We got a glimpse into adidas’ motivation in the first video, when Murray sported the new adidas Barricade 7.0 tennis shoes. The shoes provide next-generation support and comfort, ideal for any type of tennis you play.
