The Hulk was noticeably absent from recently released promotional art featuring the teams of Captain America and Iron Man in the upcoming franchise extension Civil War. And it seems there’s a good reason—he’s not in the movie. Or at least that’s what actor Mark Ruffalo, who plays the green giant with anger issues, revealed to an Italian film website.
“I believed that [Hulk] would be in the film, but at the end, it was evident that they needed to reveal that the Hulk did something very significant, and that Marvel wanted to use this in a more upfront [manner],” Ruffalo told BadTaste (based on a translation from Vulture). “My character was inserted into the script, but it was later removed. Who knows, maybe Hulk will never return. However, [Marvel] wants to keep the revelation of what happened a secret, because it is something truly significant.”
When we last saw him, Hulk and the other Avengers defeated Ultron and his minions. Then Banner hopped in a Quinjet and flew off into the horizon. It looks like we’ll have to wait longer to find out where exactly he landed and what he’s been up to since. Ruffalo still has three movies left in his contract with Marvel, so it’s unlikely the green giant will be retired from filmdom. Maybe we’re inching (slowly) towards a solo Hulk movie? Or even more unlikely, but equally exciting—maybe the studio is preparing to explore the Planet Hulk storyline.
Captain America: Civil War will be released May 6, 2016.
