‘The Office’ Spinoff Movie in the Works
The Office franchise is back with a spinoff film, David Brent: Life on the Road, in the works. Word is out that Netflix has acquired the rights to this feature, written, directed by and starring Ricky Gervais, the man who created and starred in the original British version of the hit sitcom.
Variety quoted Gervais’s enthusiastic and characteristically humorous announcement: “This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I’m going to say it now. Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again . . . which is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas, do you know what I mean? Because I want to do tours off the back of it. So for me, it’s great.”
The farfetched satire is the type of project Gervais thrives on, and the possibilities are endless. Like The Office, the movie will center on the filming of a fictional documentary, but instead of being set in a traditional workplace, the film crew will follow David as he pursues his dream of rock stardom by using his own money to finance a UK tour of his band Foregone Conclusion.
The cast also features Tom Bennett (Love & Friendship), Jo Hartley (Eddie the Eagle), Mandeep Dhillon (24: Live Another Day), Oliver Maltman (Maleficent), Anick Wiget (Midsummer Murders), and Stacha Hicks, whose most recent work includes Captain Phillips.
Gervais has a history with the streaming service, which carried his quirky series Derek and more recently Special Correspondents.
David Brent: Life on the Road, will make its world debut in the UK on August 19.
