The Panthers Are Using a Crazy Contraption to Help Cam Newton Deal With the Pass Rush
How do you improve a quarterback who is coming off his first Super Bowl appearance after the best season of his career? You get creative, that’s how, and the Carolina Panthers are pulling out all the stops to work on Cam Newton’s passing ability ahead of the 2016 NFL season.
Panthers coaches busted out a contraption we’ve never seen before: a metal tube that stretches 180 degrees around Newton, simulating the pocket, with four defenders, all taller than Newton, to mimic defensive linemen jumping up in the air, spaced evenly around it. As Newton drops back to pass, an assistant coach pushes the device toward him, and whichever way the coach turns it, Newton has to adjust so he can throw the ball through one of the four passing lanes.
When you’ve got the NFL MVP behind center, you spare no expense in trying to make sure he remains that way.
