‘The Stars My Destination’ in the Works, Possibly with ‘Skull Island’ Director
Alfred Bester’s classic sci-fi story The Stars My Destination is being adapted for the big screen by Paramount. And now comes the news that director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for The Kings of Summer and the upcoming Kong: Skull Island may be boarding the project.
Vogt-Roberts is reportedly in talks to helm this feature about a man stranded alone in space after his ship is attacked. At one point in the story, a passing starship refuses to help him, ignoring his distress beacon, which compels the man to embark on an epic journey for revenge. Memorable aspects of this futuristic tale include “jaunting,” or personal teleportation, and an explosive that can be triggered telepathically.
First published by Galaxy magazine in serialized form back in 1956, followed by the novel in 1957, this popular tale is still considered among the best science fiction of all time. According to Deadline, the inspiration behind The Stars My Destination came from a “National Geographic article about a shipwrecked sailor stuck on a raft, who couldn’t get passing ships to rescue him because they feared he was a decoy for Nazi submarines.”
Bester’s story has intrigued filmmakers for decades, drawing the attention of more than one big name director over the years. It was optioned by leading man Richard Gere in the early 1990s.
Mary Parent, known for producing high profile action-adventures like Pacific Rim and Godzilla, will produce this project via her studio-based banner, Disruption Entertainment.
