There’s a Chance Chris Bosh May Never Play in the NBA Again
Chris Bosh’s struggle with his own body has been one of the saddest stories in the NBA over the last few years. The 32-year-old Bosh missed the final 30 games of the 2014-2015 NBA season when it was discovered he had developed a blood clot in his calf which then spread into his lung. After a stint in the hospital, Bosh returned to the Miami Heat to begin the 2015-2016 campaign, only to have another blood clot develop over All-Star Weekend. Bosh hasn’t played a game of basketball since Feb. 9.

As the Heat charged into the Playoffs, winning their first-round series against the Charlotte Hornets, rumors swirled that Bosh was lobbying upper management to let him get back on the court. People in the Heat front office have disputed Bosh’s claim of good health and have kept the power forward on the bench—and for good reason. According to a report by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Bosh’s health could potentially force him into medical retirement. From Windhorst’s piece:
There is a fear within the Heat organization that Bosh’s condition will prevent him from ever being cleared to play by team doctors, several sources said. It’s a result of exhaustive consultations with specialists. Something this big and delicate, the sides have gone deep attempting to understand all the options.
It’s forced everyone to confront the possibility of Bosh ultimately being forced into a medical retirement.
That would be a sad ending to a career that should be far from finished. But Bosh’s ailment could be life-threatening, and preserving his health must take priority over his desire to help his team. Bosh and the Heat will take the off-season to learn more and ponder their options, but we may have seen the last of Chris Bosh as an NBA player.
