Thursday Tech Roundup: New Products From Microsoft, Apple and Samsung
The past few weeks have been filled with major tech releases and announcements. Here’s a breakdown of the latest products.
Windows Phone 7: With WP7, Microsoft completely revamps its smartphone operating system to compete with iOS and Android. The WP7 concept is to put all relevant information in one place and keep it all constantly updated. Their solution? Six different hubs—People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace and Office—that provide easy access to relevant information, plus a live tile home screen that display alerts, such as missed calls or unread emails.
The verdict thus far has been split, but reviewers have commented on the platform’s potential. One huge advantage of WP7 over others is that it seamlessly integrates into Xbox Live, perfect for any serious gamer.
MacBook Air: Yesterday, October 20, Apple released the next generation of its ultra-thin laptop line. Impressed by the easy portability of the iPad, the company applied this inspiration to make the Air their “most portable notebook ever.” How? Apple replaced the hard drive with flash memory—found in iPads and smartphones—enabling a slimmer design and increased battery life. The Air comes without a CD/DVD drive, but it does include a high-res display, multi-touch trackpad (found on other MacBooks), and up to seven hours of battery life. It comes in the standard 13-inch model ($1,299) and a smaller 11-inch model ($999) for increased portability.
Samsung Galaxy Tab: Samsung introduced Galaxy Tab, its first tablet computer. Unlike the iPad, the Galaxy sports a 7-inch screen and runs a large-scale version of Android. Samsung touts its larger memory and ability to view Adobe Flash, so you can view all web pages without any problems. It also includes rear- and front-facing cameras, a video recorder and video chatting. The Galaxy Tab will be hitting the market in time for the holidays.
