Last week, Crystal Dynamics released the ninth installment in the Tomb Raider video game series (watch the Day 1 trailer), the first since 2008’s Underworld. The market reception was impressive, accumulating more than one million players in the first 48 hours.
Studio head Darrell Gallagher told Variety that the themes in the new game play a role in the upcoming Tomb Raider film and that it departs from the traditional Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies.
“It was important for both of us [Crystal Dynamics and GK Films] to have a cohesive version of the franchise,” said Gallagher. “We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old Tomb Raider films.”
Talking about the differences in Lara, Crystal Dynamics creative director Noah Hughes pointed out how the updated version of the explorer has a grittier edge. “Looking at Lara as a character, she was still going to be an intellectual heroine, a brilliant archeologist, but more athletic, more competent in traversal and puzzle-solving and combat,” he explained.
Like the game, the upcoming Tomb Raider movie will feature Lara in a younger stage of life, acquiring the skills that will be cricitcal to her survival. The film will be produced by Graham King. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, known for their work on Iron Man, penned the screenplay.
