In his 16 NFL seasons, tight end, Tony Gonzalez has produced a Hall of Fame resume, with 1,154 catches, 13,391 yards and 96 touchdowns.
Several years ago, Gonzalez made headlines by announcing he had begun to follow a (mostly) vegan diet. Many wondered how a 6’5″, 247-pound professional football player would be able to meet his body’s protein needs. During his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, and even after being traded to the Atlanta Falcons, Gonzalez began working with sports nutritionist Mitzi Dulan, who also co-authored his book, The All-Pro Diet. Since Dulan also serves as team nutritionist for the Kansas City Royals, I had the opportunity to work with her. Curious myself about Gonzalez’s protein intake, I posed the question to Dulan, who shared the future Hall-of-Famer’s favorite protein shake recipe:
Prepare the following items in a blender or processor and mix on high until fully blended:
- One scoop of protein powder
- One cup of organic milk
- One cup of frozen berries
- A handful of spinach leaves
You also need to make sure you are getting enough calories throughout the day to promote muscle growth. According to Dulan, athletes looking to add muscle mass should take in 24 to 27 calories per pound of body weight. (Here’s another go-to shake recipe from the veteran tight end.)
