This Week’s Top Rap Releases (Jan. 15)
A$AP Rocky headlines this week’s top rap releases with his major label debut album, Long.Live.A$AP. (A little behind on rap releases? We got you covered: last week’s rap releases.)
A$AP Rocky, Long.Live.A$AP
This week, Rocky will finally release his oft-delayed album. Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Joey Bada$$, Big KRIT, Santigold, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz and Schoolboy Q make guest appearances on the project, which features production from Noah “40” Shebib, Hit-Boy, Jim Johnson and Danger Mouse. The result is a surprisingly solid effort. Contributing producers brought their A-game, and Rocky’s charisma rises to the challenge each time. Shy away from listening to the whole album at once, as the New York rapper’s shallow lyrics lose their shine in large doses. Definitely check out “1 Train” and “PMW.”
Consequence, Movies on Demand 4 (mixtape)
Consequence will release a mixtape this week to capitalize on his appearance on the VH1 show, Love & Hip-Hop. The free project features singers Estelle and John Legend and veteran rapper Busta Rhymes, among others. MOD4 is a follow-up to 2011’s MOD3. The rapper plans to release another mixtape soon, titled Club Certified II. Later this year via his record label, Band Camp Records, he will also release his sophomore album, tentatively titled Start Your Own Business. It will serve as his first official project since his messy split with Kanye’s GOOD Records, and as follow-up to his debut, Don’t Quit Your Day Job.
Master P, Al Capone (mixtape)
Master P returns to the southern gangsta rap scene with the release of his mixtape, Al Capone. The free project features guest appearances from Chief Keef, Fat Trel, Alley Boy and several others. The lead single, “Friends with Benefits,” featuring Kirko Bangz, was released last year. It’s been over six years since the No Limit leader has dropped an album, but he doesn’t seem to have lost his touch. And the audience is clearly still there for his brand of music.
