Top Rock Releases (Jan 29)
The top rock releases this week hit both ends of the rock spectrum—the indie rock goodness of Tegan & Sara and the heavier sounds of Chrome Molly and Tomahawk.
Tegan & Sara, Heartthrob
Heartthrob is Tegan & Sara’s seventh studio album. The LP finds the identical twins moving their sound closer to synthpop with producer Greg Kurstin as they embrace the dance floor. Heartthrob is an attempt to find new fans through a more mainstream sound. But besides exploring new territory, the twosome promises to carry their angst with them to help old fans with the transition. “I think it’s our saddest record yet,” said Tegan during an interview with Rolling Stone. Get a feel for the album through the lead single, “Closer.”
Chrome Molly, Gunpowder Diplomacy
Gunpowder Diplomacy marks Chrome Molly’s 30th anniversary. Twenty-three years have lapsed between this project and their last (1990’s Slaphead), and the hard rock/metal band once hailed as the “next Def Leppard” is out to live up to the promise of its early work. Chrome Molly’s brand of riff-laden songs fit right in to the current rock landscape. The band worked with producer Toby Jepson to create 11 intense tracks, featuring the original lineup with the exception of drummer Greg Ellis, who joined the band in the 90s. Check out the lead single, “Corporation Fear.”
Tomahawk, Oddfellows
Tomahawk, a rock supergroup consisting of musicians from bands like Fantomas, Faith No More, The Jesus Lizard and Helmet, will release their fourth studio album, Oddfellows, this week. The band’s first project in nearly six years, it serves as a follow-up to 2007’s Anonymous and features new bass player Trevor Dunn. Oddfellows is one of the band’s most reserved albums, but it remains melodic. During an interview with Spin, lead songwriter Duane Denison revealed that the band aimed to create a club-friendly record “that has some depth and intelligence and insight in it.” Check out the entire LP while it’s still streaming on SPIN.
