TRAILER: Hailee Steinfeld and Sam Worthington Star in Western Drama ‘The Keeping Room’
Popular young actors Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect) and Sam Worthington (Avatar) co-star in the upcoming western thriller The Keeping Room. Based on Julia Hart’s acclaimed 2012 Black List screenplay, the story takes place in the American south at the end of the Civil War and follows two sisters, Augusta (Brit Marling) and Louise (Steinfeld), and their female slave, Mad, as they try to defend themselves against two drunken renegade soldiers who try to invade the sisters’ isolated farmhouse.
Watch the trailer below.
The soldiers, who have broken off from the fast-approaching Union Army, are up to no good from the beginning. When Augusta first encounters them, they are on a violent mission. Escaping from an attempted assault, she flees back to her farmhouse, but the danger has just begun. The soldiers track her back to her home, where Augusta, Louise and Mad must fend them off. As the men become more unpredictable and relentless, the terrorized women are forced to take up arms and become resourceful to protect themselves and their home.
Sam Worthington stars as Moses, one of the two rogue soldiers. In the role of Mad is relative newcomer Muna Otaru (Lions for Lambs). The cast also includes Kyle Soller (Poldark), Amy Nuttall (Downton Abbey), and Ned Dennehy (The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death).
The film was directed by Daniel Barber, known for the 2009 crime drama Harry Brown.
This female-centric flick offers a fresh take on the genre. It’s a clear departure from typical male dominated westerns, which rarely feature strong female characters.
Hailee Steinfeld has a number of projects in the works, including Pitch Perfect, due out in 2017.
The Keeping Room is set to debut in theaters on September 25, 2015.
