The Dinobots made their debut over the weekend in the Transformers: Age of Extinction Super Bowl trailer.
In the brief clip, we caught a glimpse of Grimlock being ridden by a revamped Optimus Prime and a high-flying pterodactyl assumed to be Swoop. We saw no signs of the old Megatron, but there is an unidentified sleek-looking bad guy toward the end of the clip that may be a Decepticon resurrected as Galvatron.
Mark Wahlberg, who took over the lead role from Shia LaBeouf, shouts a few words, but spends most of the trailer reacting to the chaos unfolding around him. The main purpose of the video is to maximize excitement over the Dinobots and amp up fans for some primo action sequences. The plot has always been secondary in these movies, and it seems to take a backseat again here. We’ll probably learn more about the trajectory planned by director Michael Bay when the full trailer gets released later.
The first three installments of the Transformers franchise were wildly successful, grossing over $2 billion at the box office. So Age of Extinction is taking a bit of a risk by changing the direction of the cast, style and robots. In an interview with Forbes last year, Bay said, “There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise, we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting the new cast.”
Transformers: Age of Extinction will premiere on June 27.
