Will ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Appeal to Older Audiences?
During a recent interview, Transformers: Age of Extinction actor Titus Welliver said the forthcoming Transformers film is “not a kids’ movie.”
“I’ve now won the hard-earned respect of my children because I’m in a Transformers film, and I’ve always wanted to work with Michael Bay and certainly Mark Wahlberg and Kelsey Grammer,” said Welliver to Nerdist. “It’s a bit more of a darker version of the Transformer world . . . It’s not a kids’ movie, I’ll tell you that much.”
Instead of implying that the new Transformers film would be rated “R,” Welliver was most likely echoing talking points already made by co-star Mark Wahlberg and referring to the existence of an actual plot. Because honestly, were any installments of this franchise truly “kids’ movies”? Age of Extinction should still feature plenty of senseless fun, but Bay and Co. will try to place a frame around the action and tug on the heartstrings a bit.
“It [has] a tighter script and its own stand-alone thing,” Wahlberg said recently. “I think the emotional core of it, the human element, is going to be extremely powerful. . . It’s an ordinary man trying to do extraordinary things to save his daughter and keep her alive—and this boyfriend he didn’t know anything about. He’d had a child when he was in high school and his wife passed away, and the promise he’d made to her was that she wouldn’t date any boys until she graduated and that she’d be at the graduation—because we weren’t, due to the pregnancy. So there’s an anchor to it and a realness to it that I like a lot.”
Also starring Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor and T.J. Miller, Transformers: Age of Extinction will hit theaters June 27, 2014.
