Try These 3 Defensive Drills from Jeremy Lin
Since “Linsanity” struck several years ago when NBA point guard Jeremy Lin was with the New York Knicks, Lin has been on a bit of a roller coaster. After stints with the Houston Rockets and the L.A. Lakers, he recently signed with the Charlotte Hornets.
Last year, Lin shot 42 percent from the field, averaging 11.2 points and 4.6 assists in 25.8 minutes per game. Always scrappy on offense, Lin has been working particularly hard on his defensive game over the past few off-seasons. He recently posted a video on his Instagram showing him performing three simple exercises that hone his defensive acuity and lateral quickness. He captioned the video “The process never stops … find ways to improve your game each day!!”
Check out the drills below:
1. If possible, use a resistance band around your waist with a partner holding the other end behind you. Start from the center of the key, slide up to the foul line and put your hands up (as if contesting a shot). Next, pivot and shuffle back diagonally to one side. (Repeat to other side.)
2. If possible, use a resistance band around your waist with a partner holding the other end to one side of you. Palming two basketballs, keep your arms straight out to the side, parallel to the ground. Taking deliberate steps, slide/shuffle in the opposite direction from your partner.
3. Have your partner stand at the top of the key with two basketballs. Line up on the baseline. When your partner rolls a ball to one side, slide to meet the ball, staying low. Roll it back, then go fetch the other ball, which your partner rolls in the opposite direction.
