Nutrition is a funny thing.
It seems that no matter what your goals are for training, nutrition is always the most difficult component. It doesn’t matter if you’re attempting to lose or gain weight; in the end it all comes down to your nutrition. Or in this case, your nutrition shake.
At O.B. Training & Sports Performance, we have two different but similar worlds: Adult Functional Training and Athlete Sports Performance. Our Adult programs are typically made up of established professionals who have never had the time (due to work, family, school, and other obligations) to focus on their own health. Generally, their goal is to lose weight and decrease body fat. Our Sports Performance program consists mostly of high school athletes who are looking to play at the next level. Most of them are on the opposite end of their nutrition, meaning they need to gain weight and build muscle.
Training for our athletes and adults is similar in that our goal is to optimize the function of their bodies. For us, this means developing adequate levels of power, strength, speed, agility, flexibility and mobility for each individual. So although the high school football player and mother of two perform two very different training programs, the goal is still the same: optimize their body for the demands of their world.
The big difference, as I said above, is nutrition.
The strange thing about the nutrition side of things is that the two people envy each other. The adults envy the fact that the kids can pretty much eat whatever they want, and the kids envy the adults for not having to worry about eating all the time.
The reality is that both of these tasks can be daunting. While yes, restricting the amount of food you take in is difficult, forcing yourself to eat to the point of discomfort is also very difficult.
This one’s for the kids
About two years ago, I started focusing my training on Olympic weightlifting in preparation for my first competition. Alongside the hours of training came the daunting task of gaining weight. In my early teens, I was a little chubby and overweight, but as I got older and found myself more addicted to training, my problem shifted to having trouble putting on weight.
At 26 years old and in the first year of opening my own training facility, this problem worsened. I needed to find a quick, easy, and surefire way to add calories to my diet, because time was simply not on my side.

- 5 cups Old Fashioned Oats
- 1-2 medium bananas
- 4 Tbsp. peanut butter
- 25 scoops of Syntha-6 (chocolate peanut butter)
- 3 cups almond milk (dark chocolate)
- 1 Tsp. beet extract
- 1 ice cube
- 1 Handful of spinach
- 1 Handful of berries (strawberry or blueberry)
- Blend oats into a fine powder.
- Add almond milk and remaining ingredients.
- Blend until you get desired consistency.
