Tweet #X Before You Drive
According to the National Safety Council, texting while driving leads to nearly 2 million automobile accidents a year. Even more staggering, the Institute for Highway Safety reports that driving and texting causes 11 teen deaths each day!
A nationwide program called The Great American Rivalry Series, which highlights high school sports rivalries to reach teens and provides scholarship money to various programs—has teamed up with AT&T’s “It Can Wait” program to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. Drivers are encouraged to use #X, a signal to pause any conversation they’re having whenever they’re about to get behind the wheel.
For the past two weeks, “The Great American Rivalry Series #X Battle” challenged high schools to tweet #X along with their own school’s hashtag. The school that make the most noise will win an exclusive concert by English pop group Rixton.
So far, the X-battle has racked up 1.37 million tweets, but we’re hoping the #X can bring in a lot more. Even if you’re not currently in high school, this is a great campaign to promote, with serious potential to prevent accidents and to save hundreds of lives.
