Stipe Miocic is the UFC heavyweight champion but he's also a blue collar guy from Euclid, Ohio, just east of Cleveland. He works as a firefighter and paramedic in the suburbs, and he trains at Strong Style Mixed Martial Arts & Training Center, a local gym.
Growing up and still living in the Cleveland area, Miocic knows his way around the local scene. Here are his five go-to recommendations for visitors to his home town. As someone who lives in the area, I can attest that his list is on point.
1. Eat at Barrio
Ask Clevelanders about Barrio, and 90 percent of them will give you a glowing review. The Mexican restaurant specializes in $3 tacos ($2 during happy hour) that are basically mini burritos. To order, you fill out an ingredient checklist that allows for creative and delicious combinations.
2. Hang Out in Tremont
Tremont is a neighborhood just south of downtown Cleveland filled with high-end restaurants, the original Barrio location and several awesome bars, such as the Tremont Tap House and The Treehouse. Edison's pizza is a late-night favorite.
3. Indians, Cavs and Browns Games
Definitely go to an Indians and Cavs game. Browns game? Maybe not so much.
4. Nightlife and West 25th Street
West 25th Street refers to Cleveland's Ohio City district, home of the West Side Market, microbreweries and gastropubs. In 2011, it was named one of the 10 best places to bar hop by USA Today, and it's grown substantially since then. Popular establishments include Great Lakes Brewing Company, Market Garden Brewery, McNulty's Bier Markt/Bar Cento, Town Hall, Nano Brew and Platform Beer Co., which is a short walk from West 25th Street.
5. Hang Out With Stipe
Miocic definitely knows his way around Cleveland hotspots. Your best chance to meet up with him is to post-up at the Tremont Barrio for a few nights. There's a good chance he'll make an appearance and destroy an absurd number of tacos.
