The 2012 Nike U.S. Open of Surfing, part of the Red Bull Signature Series, a showcase of the best in surf, skate, BMX, music, fashion and art, took place from July 28 to Aug. 5, in Huntington Beach, Calif., but you can catch all the action on NBC, starting at 1:30 p.m. EDT tomorrow. Even if you get your kicks on the field with traditional team sports, this is an event you won't want to miss.

In preparation for the broadcast, STACK caught up with two of the world's top surfers, Carissa Moore and Julian Wilson, both of whom dominated their categories.

After some last-minute heroics on the final day, Wilson was crowned the overall winner. He called it "the biggest highlight of my career so far," saying, "the Open has the biggest crowds we get all year. To look into the beach and see all the people in the stadium-style seating is something we don't surf in front of usually. It's surreal."

With so many variables, surfing isn't known for its consistency. But throughout the Open, Wilson posted the event's highest scores. What's his trick for managing the most powerful waves? He says, "Growing up [surfing] my whole life, you become aware of the different conditions you're putting yourself in during that 30-minute window. There will always be the uncontrollables, but I can predict how it's going to turn out after seeing what I have."

Consistency was something Moore, the 2011 Open champion, would have liked more of this year, but the reigning champ had to settle for second. "I didn't like handing over that trophy!" she says. "I like putting on a great surfing performance in front of people, but it gave me a new drive for the sport again and I'm even more excited for next year."

The runner-up spot gave Moore the third overall ranking in the 2012 ASP Women's World Championship Tour season. Not a bad finish.
