UTIOG music review

Get better at the sports you play and the life you lead at STACK. Improve your training, nutrition and lifestyle with daily

Try Under the Influence of Giants' self-titled album, released Aug. 8. Hendrix's guitar rifts, Zeppelin's drum interludes, the Stones' lyrics—some of rock and roll's greatest—have all inspired UTIOG. But in their debut CD, UTIOG reveals an eclectic style that flirts with many different genres, from David Bowie and the Clash to Jurassic 5 and the Wu Tang Clan. And while these guys hail from Cali, their sound is far from surfer chic. The L.A. quad—featuring Aaron Bruno (vocals/lyrics), Drew Stewart (guitar), Jamin Wilcox (drums, keyboards) and David Amezcua (bass)—offers sounds of modern punk/alt-rock mixed with funky 80s beats.

Track three, "In the Clouds," is a great warm-up tune. Think the Killers meet the Bee Gees. It's a disturbing thought, but the track is fast-paced with a catchy hook. Amp your workout with tracks one and five—"Ah Ha" and "Mama's Room." Both are energetic beats with an edgy twist. And, when you're ready to unwind after a hard practice, track nine, appropriately titled "Lay Me Down," has a melodic rock sound with a soulful vibe, perhaps inspired by another music giant they were influenced by, Al Green.

Overall, UTIOG's debut CD is an expansive compilation with catchy tracks that provide enough energy to keep you going for an entire lift.
