View With Your Crew: The Hunger Games
If you haven’t heard of the best-selling novel The Hunger Games—part of a trilogy by Suzanne Collins—the upcoming winter break can be your time to catch up and read these fast-paced and engrossing books. The film version of The Hunger Games is set to be released in March 2012, and you need to see it.
“The Hunger Games” takes us to the post-apocalyptic world of Panem, where 12 districts are subject to the rule of a wealthy Capitol city. Every year, one boy and one girl from each district are picked by lottery and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, in which the participants, or “tributes,” must fight to the death in an outdoor arena and on live TV–until only one remains.
Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, volunteers as a tribute when her younger sister’s name is pulled in the District 12 lottery. Although she is secretly skilled with a bow and arrow, Katniss must take on other tributes much larger and faster than she, some of whom were bred for the games since birth.
Once the games begin, Katniss’ survival strategy unfolds, but her most compelling and challenging moment occurs when she’s faced with eliminating a friend—Peeta Mellark, the other District 12 tribute (played by Josh Hutcherson).
The Hunger Games (both the book and movie) delves into the mind of an athlete—fierce competition, the will to win and the desire to put your friends and teammates ahead of yourself. The books are filled with non-stop action, and the movie promises to be just as compelling. So plan to load up your crew and hit up the theater when the movie releases on March 23, 2012.
