Wardrobe Essentials
Get Paid to Play author Nancy Nitardy recommends treating your meeting with coach as a job interview. “A T shirt and jeans is probably not the best way to show up for that first impression,” Nitardy says. “Dress appropriately, [because] the next guy walking in the door may look more professional than you…and may be put ahead of you on the recruiting list.”
Keeping your wardrobe stocked with quality essentials will help you give meetings that “interview” feel. When well kept, they look polished and pair well with whatever—whether another sartorial basic or something that screams fashion-forward.
Here’s a look at the must-have items for your closet and how to wear them when you’ve got a bigtime coach meeting.
Khakis
If you know you’ll be seeing a potential coach, wash and press them. Otherwise, it’s fine to let these pants look like you’ve worn and tossed them in the corner a few times.
Dark Jeans
Whatever style you like is fine, just make sure they aren’t too tight, too baggy or too decorated. You don’t want your jeans to speak more about your character than you do.
Crisp White Buttondown
The one featured has subtle pinstripes—subtle being the keyword. Plain is fine, too; just make sure it’s always ironed and stain-free.
Reversible Belt
An easy, go-to item. And since you probably dress up less than you dress down, you don’t have to worry about spending money on more than one formal belt.
Classic Blazer, Tie & Shoes
Ties are an easy way to stylize any dressy outfit; but if you aren’t sure what patterns match with what, stick with classic prints. As for shoes, Sperry Topsider-style is fine. Just make sure you have summer [leather] and winter [suede] versions. To top off your timeless look, keep a blazer on hand (the one featured has a detachable hoodie). It can refine any look.
